Dr. Sonia Pasquale, co-founder of Acumobility, wanted to create something that would support spinal mobility and extension at home. This amazing design provides unparalleled results. The Ultimate Roller is designed to be used by everyone. Whether you are a yogi looking for the next generation yoga wheel; a runner; a mom/dad with back pain; an elite cross fitter or powerlifter; or just someone looking to support healthy spinal motion – this is the product for you.
When you roll your back on a basic flat roller, you are jamming the spinal segments and restricting motion as you roll- the exact opposite of what you are trying to achieve. Our revolutionary design was created to support natural spinal movement and enhance overall mobility. The Spine Gap allows you to target the para-spinal muscles on either side of the spine and not jam the spine as you roll. Our patented staggered bump pattern allows you to feel deep pressure in the muscles on either side of the spine. The bumps help to release knots and trigger points as well as enhance lymphatic drainage as you roll and are set very high, so they can dig deeply into your muscles. While The Ultimate Back Roller was specifically made to be the best back roller on the market, it also works amazingly well all over the rest of the body. From your neck, to arms, to laterals, to glutes, to legs. This roller is built from the highest quality molded foam in the world holding 1000lbs and with its uniquely designed height and width you won’t tip over while rolling.

How to introduce accuracy in child medicine dispensers? Each child reacts differently to taking medicine, and positive experiences are critical to ensure easy repeat dispensing. So, when Safety 1st came to us with the request for a dispensing device, we proposed and developed a range of three dispensers, varying from a passive to an active parental approach.
Bottle Medicine Dispenser features simple to read dosage markings measure up to 3 teaspoons for an easy fill.
Soft Touch Medicine Dispenser combines a pacifier with a medicine dispenser. Easy to read and fill while juggling an infant, the unique gravity flow design ensures no medicine is left behind. A water-tight seal is created by simply snapping the two halves of the dispenser together, making it easy for adults to reopen and clean.
The Easy Fill Medicine Syringe is simple to fill and dispense with one hand. Rubber co-molding provides a soft touch grip and ensures that the adult can easily maintain a hold on the syringe. The elliptical funnel shape of the body makes it comfortable while ensuring that the syringe will not roll off a tabletop.
The Set & Measure Medicine Spoon is a hybrid of spoon syringe, offering an accurate and familiar way to dispense medicine to a little one, featuring preset dosage markings allowing the parent to move the plunger up or down to fill the correct dosage and dispense. A wide pour, soft touch tip is comfortable for the child, while clearly visible markings on the body assure accuracy. A dosage is easily stored or transported when covered with the spill-proof cap.

Dorel Juvenile Group wanted to enhance its brands with new technology. We focused on saving lives and created a side-impact technology that was simple in form yet powerful in performance. The first car seat to feature the Air Protect technology was the Safety 1st Complete Air. The seat was, in all internal testing, the safest side impact car seat in the world.
With only an 8″ thick car door and a car seat to protect them, side impact collisions are the deadliest, accounting for one in three child crash fatalities–nearly all due to head trauma.
How could we provide market leading innovation that would be cost effective, affordable to parents, and rapidly integrated into any new car seat platform?
Wanting to safely and effectively incorporate the technology of the automobile airbag into child car seats, we tested every energy absorbing material we could get our hands on and it became clear that a slow release of air offered the best protection; Air Protect was born.
HaA Design helped design, test, manufacture and patent Air Protect™ technology. The precise release of air extends the amount of time it takes to slow a child’s movement in a crash, immediately reducing crash forces at the most critical spot: around a child’s head.
After the research and conceptualization phase, HaA designed and helped build three new vertical drop test fixtures, complete with a high definition, slow motion video capture system, allowing Safety 1st to rapidly validate the prototypes and collect valuable data at a fraction of the time and cost typically associated with crash testing. Once a design was proven on these test sleds, testing moved to million-dollar full speed crash sleds.

Keyport is a start-up company that set out to re-design the conventional keychain. Initially, Keyport worked with several design consultants in developing the first limited edition Keyport at the end of 2008. It was a fully machined version that had expensive parts and was difficult to assemble.
In 2009, Keyport contacted HaA to cost reduce and design a new “universal access” device. The universal design would include RF ID access fobs, flash drives, mini flashlight , and a host of others. The goal was to use stamped parts instead of machined, eliminate or combine internal features that would reduce machining to lower cost of the parts.
After reviewing Keyport’s original design and their manufacturing processes, HaA recommended that the unit be made out of a thermoplastic such as Ultem. The new design reduced the cost of the unit by 80% and the overall assembled weight by almost 50%. This product was released as Keyport V1 (metal clad) in April 2010. The V2 (all plastic/Ultem) was funded and successfully launched thru Kickstarter in the Summer of 2013!
As part of manufacturing support, HaA introduced Keyport to local (Boston) vendors who supplied all of the injection molded parts, machined screw nodes, stamped metal cladding and Ultrasonic tooling.

First Act is a leading musical instrument manufacturer based in Boston. They create musical products, instruments and accessories that inspire and educate people of all ages through musical play.
PowerGig: Rise of the SixString guitar changed the way children, and even adults experience music. PowerGig is a guitar based video game where players strum the guitar according to the notes dictated by the game. Beyond that, Powergig can operate as a stand-alone guitar for personal practice.
HaA aided First Act in the development of the product, making its appearance resemble an electric guitar by adding strings instead of buttons and by designing the electrical connections to the frets. HaA tested various foam types to create the string dampener that suppressed sound when playing in video game mode. Mechanical engineering was provided to create the dampening push mechanism for the strings. Strings allow players to truly learn the instrument and not just the game.

Creating a pediatric solution for a revolutionary mobile scanner:
Neurologica, the maker of a revolutionary movable CT scanners faced a challenge. Having developed their scanners with the brain injuries of adults in mind, they realized that they were also ideal for pediatric care.
Neurologica faced a problem. It needed a design solution that would communicate that it’s machines were designed with pediatric care in mind. Being new to the industry Neurologica did not have a brand that was known within pediatrics. In addition, CT scanners are pieces of equipment that are needed at a time when children and their parents are stressed, afraid and unwell. Due to cost constraints the Neurologica CereTom unit was fabrication from sheet metal and did not look approachable or communicate the modern and sophisticated technology that was inside it.
The designers considered the whole experience for all the stakeholders involved. Patients that needed to be distracted, parents that needed to be calmed and caregivers that needed story lines with which to engage their parents. The design team decided to develop graphic solutions that could be applied to the outside of the CT scanners. This provided a cost-effective solution that could work for a range of children’s ages from infants to toddlers and preschoolers.
For infants a calming sea scape would reassure parents and would provide medical staff with opportunities to engage the infants through a variety of images and references.
For toddlers and preschoolers, the designs presented friendly caring cartoon animals in engaging environments that would intrigue and entertain the patients.
The new designs transformed the scanners into products that could easily be associated with the pediatric environment and showed that Neurologica was serious about addressing every aspect of the scanning experience for patients, parents and caregivers. Within weeks of the first design being completed Children’s Hospital of Boston became the first pediatric care unit to install one of Neurologica’s pediatric CT scanners.

The Boston Scientific eXcelon Transbronchial aspiration needle is a minimally invasive procedure used to collect tissue for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. It is a safe, economical device with a low incidence of complication, it lowers the need for invasive surgical procedures and also reduces healthcare costs.
As the global leader of less-invasive medical devices, Boston Scientific wanted to simplify Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA) –The original Boston Scientific needle assemblies were two-handed devices, with multiple pieces that often detached, bent or kinked. Leaks in the wire assembly would dislodge biopsy samples from the needle, necessitating a repeated procedure. In short , these needles were difficult to use, expensive to manufacture, and sometimes failed during the procedure. Our main goal was to improve the UI/UX and if possible reduce the overall manufacturing costs. The schedule was to complete a production ready version within two months.
From initial research, it was determined that the original needles were not only a two-handed operation, they were commonly a two-person operation. This required clear communication and coordination between the doctor and the scrub nurse. Time tracking helped us prioritize feature requirements.
With research phase complete, the HaA team then focused on concepts with a syringe locking feature that allowing single-handed actuation. With the understanding that a single handed actuation was necessary it became apparent that their existing assembly methods were not optimal. HaA recommended the needle actuation and syringe vacuum to be offset. This enabled us to eliminate most of the tight tolerances and drastically reduce cost. The new Swordfish form evolved quickly from there.
In summary, the freeing of the hands of the surgeon set this device apart from competitors. The new UI was intuitive and quickly learned by its users. The procedure time was reduced and the issue of dislodge biopsies was eliminated. Manufacturing costs were drastically reduced.
This award winning product has been very profitable for Boston Scientific!

The MSP platform from Big Band/Arris is a series of rack mounted video delivery servers that provide VoIP services. Most on-demand video from all leading cable TV companies is routed through the MSP servers.
In late 2011, Arris purchased BigBand Networks to expand their media delivery offerings. Arris is a worldwide powerhouse in the telecommunications industry. With their recent purchase of Motorola, Arris became the leader in providing on demand video across the cloud, network and home.
Arris approached the HaA team requesting a new front panel bezel design for their chassis. The bezel needed to provide wire management for the array of cabling that flows into the servers and also to create a uniform branded look across multiple platforms. HaA was also asked to design a switch box for the back of the device which would allow fail-safe switch-over of signals from one server blade to another. The designs needed to be striking and be seen from across data centers.
Working closely with the engineering team, HaA presented industry leading aesthetics and incorporated unique features. The designs were quickly prototyped and assembled to the platforms. HaA was able to provide a functional and beautiful design solution without adding much additional manufacturing and assembly cost. To complete the project, HaA provided graphic overlay design to give the server chassis a uniform look. The result is a platform that is friendly to installers and is universally recognized as Arris.

Mike Harakal, inventor of PawPail, came to HaA to alleviate a problem in his community regarding the control of everyday pet waste. Many community living neighborhoods, like his, require home owners to keep their pet’s waste in their garage until the weekly garbage truck arrives. This is not ideal as the smell can easily build up over time and attract other animals.
HaA worked with Mike to turn his ideas for a pet waste management station into a convenient system that is multi-functional and affordable.
PawPail is a revolutionary container designed to supply you with custom odor fresh bags, discreetly house your dog’s waste in a convenient area and keep your environment clean. When your dog goes to the bathroom, simply open the top lid of PawPail, pull out a scented bag to pick up the waste, open up the main lid where you will find a perforated basket to pop the waste inside. Pawprint perforations are located on each side of the PawPail to properly ventilate your pail to prevent odor build up over time.
PawPail was designed to be mounted outside and on your property to provide you with a convenient pet waste cleaning experience.

Radiadyne works closely with HaA to develop advanced medical devices, including life changing transformation in Dosimetry Monitoring. After eight years and millions of dollars invested in research and development, OARtrac is the first of its kind radiation dose monitoring platform providing gold standard accuracy without correction factors, real-time pinpoint measurement, and dedicated intracavitary delivery devices to measure where it counts.
OARtrac monitors multiple cancer treatment modalities within the same treatment center, as well as reduces overall treatment costs related to routine patient dose monitoring through a reusable dosimeter. The OARtrac system provides dose data for the radiation oncologist to decipher and use to adjust a patient’s treatment plan accordingly, therefore providing true adaptive radiotherapy for personalized cancer treatment.
Eric Hyman, HaA's VP of Engineering, was heavily involved with the overall product development, engineering and manufacturing process of the OARtrac, receiving a 2018 MedTech Engineering Award.

Perma Pure is a leading manufacturer of gas conditioning products.
HaA took on the design and development the O2asis with challenges ahead, including the testing involved with a respiratory device involving rigorous biocompatibility and safety analysis. Other factors to assess was the design and manufacture of a device with electronics, heat, oxygen and a water reservoir.
Mixing electronics, heat, pure oxygen and water together can be a recipe for disaster. That’s why when designing the O2Asis, HaA needed to be disciplined and careful, while still keeping their fresh design sensibility. One of the biggest challenges faced was the line coming from the device to the consumer. It carries humidified oxygen, and has to be heated to an ideal temperature to prevent “rain out” (condensing) of the water. Also, this is a critical area of the device, as the heat is derived electrically, and a factor of safety is required. This was accomplished by utilizing a special wire that we sourced, and low voltage electricity. Another roadblock to overcome was the heating pad for the water reservoir itself. By integrating electronics into a printed heating pad, we were able to precisely control and define the heat profile to work in synchrony with the heated line.
The O2asis Humidifier is a safe prescription device intended to add warmth and humidity to breathing gases for administration to a patient and is for use with oxygen concentrators or gas sources in homecare, hospital, extended care facilities, and hospice environments. The O2asis Humidifier is a non-sterile device intended for patients who require humidification of supplemental breathing gases between 0.5 and 6 lpm and is for single patient use, although it may be used by multiple patients. This is the case if the consumable water well cartridge is replaced prior to transfer of the device to a new patient.
This palm sized device provides comfort when used with home oxygen, while humidifying & delivering warmed air through the cannula. Users can carry the device or place it alongside them when plugged in at home or revive hours of humidification on-the-go. The O2asis provides so much more humidification than a bubbler without the associated drawbacks.

They manufacture precision standard, custom radiometric and photometric products addressing specific needs of the aerospace, automotive, electronic imaging, laser diode, LED, lighting, medical imaging and optics industries. They also provide custom integrated solutions for customers who require superior optical calibration services.
Labsphere came to HaA for help in designing a low cost, human factors friendly product, that was durable, customer serviceable (light replacement) and that would meet their strict performance requirements. The difficulty in this type of product was that the unit needed to be completely light tight. If the unit wasn’t reliability sealed during manufacturing, the readings from the unit would be inaccurate. The combination of needing to be light tight and the customer bulb replacement, required the HaA design and engineering teams to work closely to be innovative with how the system as a whole would function and be manufactured.
The output was a device that met Labsphere’s specifications and met all of HaA’s UI/UX standardized requirements. Customers liked the look of the integrated unit and stand, the compact size, balanced feel and its overall UI. They felt the product is very intuitive to use.

Today, GSHS has been expanded to include China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.
The first product GSHS wanted HaA to develop was a user friendly water purifier that would complement the average Korean/Asian household. GSHS also tasked HaA to develop an aspirational European brand to complement this new product line. With minimal input, HaA created a product spec, marketing spec and a project schedule.
HaA then researched, designed, engineered and manufactured an award winning, European branded water purifier. The Vaärenta counter-top water purifier has a swiveling faucet that allows Vaärenta users to easily dispense clean water into small and large containers. It also has an energy saving weight sensor on the top surface that turns the unit on when a cup is placed on the pad. Additonal features include a carbonation jet and communicative lighting that keeps users informed of its status. The Purifier has exceeded GSHS’s original sales forecasts.

Bufalo Bicycles is a small company based out of Taiwan that produces and manufacturer bicycles and bicycle components for multiple company brands throughout the world.
They wanted to create their own brand and a focused design of three bikes: road, mountain and folding. They wanted a brand that had a large company look. The task was twofold.
Educating a company that wasn’t familiar with brand development and guiding that same company to make the correct decisions in defining a brand. With a limited budget and a very tight timeline, HaA took on the challenge.
HaA started with stakeholder interviews and large bicycle company brand comparisons. HaA then followed through with our proprietary brand development methods and created the brand name Bufalo. In parallel, HaA did focused trend research and completed a design guide that included their colors, materials and finishes for their 2014-2015 bicycle lines. The outcome was a brand and a product style that exceeded our customer’s expectations.

In 1995 GS Home Shopping Network (GSHS) was the first ever television-based home shopping network. GSHS introduced a cutting-edge distribution channel that integrated broadcasting with retail. They were also the first to computerize sales systems, enabling real-time monitoring of customer response which then raised the quality of product selection and program. Today, GSHS has been expanded to include China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.
Klöken is part of the GS Home Shopping Network. They needed and wanted a quality brand with a European flair that was designed for the Korean market. This design endeavor was one part of a multiple product branding effort in the categories of water purification, cooking, and food storage.
Klöken is a 100% air-tight food container focusing primarily on the Asian food culture. In response to glass construction, we chose to employ Tritan™ for its higher visual clarity, durability, and lower weight properties. Another benefit of Tritan™ is that it is manufactured without bisphenol-A (BPA). Tritan™ is also both heat and chemical resistant. This is especially important in cultures that eat and preserve items such as kimchi daily. From a use and aesthetic perspective, “preservation meets presentation” was our driving goal. Klöken attempts to bridge the gap of serving and storing by addressing both worlds at once.

Ontrée is a leading Korean brand and retailer offering natural and organic beauty products to the environmentally conscious market. A pioneer in its field, Ontree has been providing consumers a range of alternative cosmetics for over a decade. Today, Ontrée has grown to include shops globally, including its first American store in the Los Angeles area.
Ontrée engaged HaA early on to carry out the design of their entire brand image including logo, product packaging, website, marketing strategy and advertising materials. In order to generate a series of concepts that would be in line with the core company values and business goals, the first step was to gather stakeholder visions for the Ontree brand. In doing so, the HaA team quickly learned that the logo would have to easily translate into other languages.
The project resulted in the creation of a logo that is built upon the simple yet stylish O, which is found in both the Korean and English alphabets. Realistic and sophisticated tree branches and leaves create an intuitive reminder of its brand image and name: Natural and Organic.

Taiwan-based Wistron is one of the largest design manufacturers in the world, specializing in information and communication technology products. Although you may not be as familiar with the Wistron brand, they manufacture 1 in 7 computers sold globally. The company produces a wide variety of products that are sold to international clients, who introduce them to the market under their own brand names.
On a quest for their latest product, Wistron collaborated with HaA to develop a brand that would sell in the competitive Chinese market. HaA carried out an ethnographic research program in the major metropolitan areas of China and as a result, the all-in-one desktop concept was born.
The Wistron all-in-one PC concept was designed to appeal to three different market segments and to emphasize its powerful hardware capabilities. In turn, our team created three different designs for the all-in-one PC product strategy. As part of the visual strategy our designers wanted to create an aesthetic that was simple, solid and structural. HaA also incorporated subtle Chinese accents in response to the insights from our ethnographic research campaign. The Wistron all-in-one PC key features include 24″ display monitor, upgradable component access and user programmed PUI.

Radiospire set out to develop wireless technology at a time when no other consumer electronics company was exploring it. They established the Airhook TM chip-set technology that would allow the wireless transmission of uncompressed audio and video signals. To innovate this new technology, Radiospire needed to create its first-ever HDMI Wireless Transmitter. That’s when HaA was called in to develop the entire system from the inside out.
Utilizing its global capabilities, HaA Boston collaborated with the HaA Korea team to provide the industrial design of the system while the Boston team engineered the device and guided Radiospire through the manufacturing process.
The product was later licensed by Philips Electronics and Best Buy. In the end, Radiospire had a product that revolutionized consumer electronics and home entertainment.

KT (Korea Telecom) is the leader of information and communications in South Korea. KT has brought together the best qualities of service with technologies and merged mobile, voice and data into a single field. With this single structure, KT helped Korea earn the title of ‘Tech Capital of the World’. KT has many products and services and sells them globally under different brands.
After completing KT’s design guidelines, HaA was tasked in designing a new user-friendly set-top box with very tight cost constraints. It needed to be easy to install , easy to see the channel numbers and easily hidden if necessary. The main focuses were size and cable management.
After a series of in-home interviews, HaA determined that there was limited space near TVs in Korean living rooms and it would be very beneficial to have a low-profile unit that would fit under the TV’s lower front edge. The lower profile also aided with installing the set-top box behind TVs when using a wall mount system. Customers were also concerned about the expense of longer length cables. Therefore, a single all-in-one cable (approximately 1.5 m) would be run from the set-top box to a mini I/O box. This eliminated the need for numerous longer cables and the unsightliness of the disorganized cables coming from the set-top box. This design was well received from both KT and its customers.
